Restaurant News: Nicky's Week at Ra Sushi
The Ra Sushi family is honored to celebrate the life of Nicky Mailliard with their 13th annual Nicky's Week that started on May 22 and ends on May 28. Nicky was the nephew of one of Ra Sushi's founding partners. At the age of 13, Nicky passed away after his battle with brain cancer. Being touched by this life changing event, Ra Sushi started Nicky's Week to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. During this week-long fundraiser, 100% of the menu price for items purchased from their special Nicky's Week menu will be donated directly to St. Jude.
The Nicky's Week menu includes food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Click here to see what they offer. Ra Sushi invited me for a tasting of this menu, which by the way changes every year. I was excited to try it out since it's been a couple years since I've dined at Ra Sushi. To my surprise, they have updated the menu with some tasty new items. Big thanks to the manager, Ezra. He made us feel at home and truly took care of us.
To start, I ordered the Garlic Ponzu Yellowtail. This dish was a great way to open the meal. The yellowtail was fresh and light. The garlic ponzu sauce added a great flavor. Next, I moved on to the Pork Tacos. The braised pork was tender and has nice glaze from the yuzu pepper soy. The third item from the Nicky's Week menu was by far my favorite thing the whole night. It was the Chirashi Poke. It has four different kinds of seafood: tuna, salmon, yellowtail and shrimp. If you look to the right of the poke bowl, you'll see two sauces. The top one was a sort of sriracha sauce. I poured this stuff all over my poke. The flavors were perfect. This is a must order if you love poke.
Now I couldn't leave Ra Sushi without acutally eating sushi. So I ordered two rolls: Chili Shrimp Roll and Tuna Roll. I was hesitant to order the Chili Shrimp Roll because of the possibility of the spicy ingredients being too hot for me. I saw spicy crab mix, jalapenos, spicy mayo and sriracha! To my pleasant surprise, the spiciness did not overpower the flavor of the roll. The cream cheese and rice definitely balanced the spicy ingredients. The crispy shrimp and jalapeno slices added a good texture. The Tuna Roll was suggested by my server (shout out to Charles!). It was a great suggestion. Spicy albacore mix is rolled with avocado and cucumber and topped with spicy tuna tartare. The crispy wonton chip added much needed texture since the other ingredients were mushy. I would definitely order both of these rolls again.
Last but not least, we were treated to 2 desserts: Coconut Creme Brulee and Cinnamon Tempura Gelato. Yesssss...you read that right! My tastebuds were blown away by the Coconut Creme Brulee. It was creamy and rich. The coconut flavor was a perfect touch to the dessert. The Cinnamon Tempura Gelato was perfectly cooked, with the ice cream still intact. The textures were perfect and the chocolate sauce added the perfect amount of sweetness to the dish.
All dishes were accompanied by my cocktail, Sea Monkey. It consisted of Skyy Raspberry Vodka, Bols Black Raspberry Liqueur, pineapple and cranberry juices. It was very fruity. Failing to realize how to enjoy the drink, I drank most of it without mixing the two levels together. Then it hit me to take a chop stick and mix it. That definitely made it less strong, as I was only drinking the alcohol part, with the pineapple juice at the bottom. So don't forget to mix it if you want the full flavor of the drink!
Don't sleep on Ra Sushi! Their new menu items, great service and trendy atmosphere make it a great spot. Plus, you'll be dining and drinking for a great cause during Nicky's Week!
